ANNUAL COACH TRIP SATURDAY 26 SEPTEMBER 2026. ALL WELCOME

This years coach trip will take place on Saturday 26 September 2026. The coach will leave the Vue Cinema car park at Doncaster Dome at 0800 (be there by 0745) and will collect at the Park and Ride of York Road at about 0815 (be there by 0800). We will be offering 3 walks, approximate details below.

11.5 mile walk from Ravenscar to the Old Harbour, Scarborough along the Cleveland Way coastal path.
7 mile walk from Cloughton to the Old Harbour, Scarborough along the Cleveland Way coastal path.
3.5 mile round walk from Scalby Mills to the Old Harbour, Scarborough along the Cleveland Way.

The walks have been selected so they are suitable for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Walkers.

Bring along your family, partner or a friend. They do not have to walk, a day out in Scarborough is always a good idea.

The coach will leave Scarbrrough at 1800 so this should give people time to get some fish and chips and/or visit a local hostelry.

The coach will be provided by Buckley’s, same as last year, and will seat up to 49. Based on a take up rate of 43 the cost is £20/per person. If we manage to fill the coach the cost will come down to £17.50 and you will be refunded the £2.50 difference. Please note this is a 10% increase on the 2025 cost. This reflect the cost increases experienced by all coach operators in the last year plus the travel distance is slightly greater than in 2025. All other local walking groups have experienced similar cost increases during 2026

Walks Leaders Needed

You will appreciate that we put on three walks per week, so that’s about 150 walks a year. At the moment leadership of these walks is being undertaken by too few members. We need more people to undertake leading, particularly for the Thursday and Saturday walks. A new leader, if they wish, would be very welcome to buddy-up with an experienced leader to guide them through the process of planning, recce-ing, etc.

Expenses

Ramblers has always paid expenses to members who have incurred reasonable expenses in the course of Ramblers’ activities. These include fuel expenses (at 28p per mile) for carrying out a recce, attending a maintenance session, etc.
Given that Ramblers is a charity most members choose not to claim, but the right is there.
The treasurer is responsible for deciding if something is a ‘reasonable expense’.

Minutes of Committee meeting held on 20^th May 2019 at the Three Horse Shoes

DG added that he had visited Nur Indian Restaurant with a view to discussing their advert but it was closed due to a fire.

Apologies for not appearing in person

Coverage in the DFP has not been a regular as in the past, due in part to the departure of Nigel Booth, who was my main contact, although he did contact me again only this week asking for some “walk” stories.

Ellen Beardmore, who turns out to be Nigel’s boss has been my contact of late with whom I have built a good rapport. Since February we have

Been picture of the week
Appeared on the letters pages promoting our Thursday Walks

We are expecting a “Special” to be released on Betty who has been interviewed by the DFP following a story David Gadd kindly wrote and sent in.

DG asked if we should consider a follow up story. TM had contacted Warmsworth Parish Council concerning the recent work to create a circular route in the area with a view to a joint article, but had received no response. He will follow this up. DG suggested Dave King as a long term member still walking with two replacement hips, and will have a word with Dave on the next walk.

We continue to get support from the free “Monthly” magazines: Today Magazine, Arrow Press, Thorne Times and Conisbrough in Focus, as well as the fortnightly Doncaster Gazette

Unfortunately it is not always easy to get copies of these so if anyone is on the circulation and we are mentioned be useful to pass it on.

Social Media and in particular FB continues to provide promotional opportunity

For instance in the last 28 days

16.5 individuals saw our posts (usually a narrative or photo album)
Members were somewhat baffled by the 16.5 individuals but agreed that PR must know what he was doing.
There were 4500 individual “engagement” with our FB page (liking an item, sending comments)
66 page “Likes” – basically a measure of “popularity”

I get a reasonably regular flow of question regarding our walks i.e are they free, how far do we walk, are dogs allowed.

Only time will tell if this approach will lead to new walks and increased membership

Walks Programme .

DG said Tuesday walks were going well with attendances around the 30 mark, and Saturday walks were also doing well with attendances around the 20 mark. Thursday walks had been somewhat disappointing but ten had attended the last one.

Rights of Way Report.

MW reported on three items from the April PROW Forum:

The Order for Seven Yards Road in Armthorpe has been submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for decision. This is quite a long path that proceeds from the existing public footpath between Branton and Armthorpe, following Seven Yards Road north eastwards to Great Gate Wood, at which point it turns in a north westerly direction until it meets Holme Wood Lane. The original Claim is dated 2005 though Armthorpe representatives at the Forum claim it was initiated in the last century.
An Order has been issued for a short path from St Wilfrids Churchyard to Hickleton Hall. I am unsure of the background to this.
A contract for the demolition of the bridge on Sprotbrough 5 has been awarded. The Mayor has made a commitment that the bridge will be replaced and funding is being sought.

TM reported the following:

There is very little to report since the last meeting on March 18th. On March 27th I went on a recce with Stuart Horrocks and Andy Carnall from Doncaster RoW with regard to a proposed circular route, partly financed by Warmsworth Parish Council, which would start at the Boat Inn at Sprotbrough, go along the TPT as far as Conisbrough viaduct and return to Sprotbrough down the other side of the River Don.

On Wednesday 10th April a team of 8 volunteers carried out various tasks on this route which mainly involved erecting 6 new metal way-mark posts with appropriate signage. The hardest part of the job, as in most cases, was getting the materials to the various locations which were impossible to reach with the council van. Nevertheless, a successful outcome and everything was completed by 1.30pm. As a follow up I intended to write an article for the DFP to publicise this new route and asked for a few additional details from Warmsworth Parish Council but despite two reminders I have received nothing from them. I may simply go ahead with the information I have.

The Rights of Way work party was due to meet on May 8th had to rearranged. Stuart Horrocks was unavailable, having been involved in a cycle accident and also because he would be on holiday for two weeks shortly afterwards his return to work. The rearranged date will be on Wednesday 5th June, but the venue is still to be finalised since Stuart does not return until May 28th. There are numerous jobs outstanding and several recently reported repairs to carry out.

Hilda Levine has contacted Keith Staines to ask if any of his group wish to attend.

DN said he was looking at venues for Christmas 2019, and was considering the Brewers Arms in Snaith, the Green Dragon in Welton, and pubs around Walkeringham.

- Get Doncaster Moving.

TM said that so far we have offers from 5 members of our group to lead walks for the above programme. Details of all dates and procedures were sent to those who had offered to lead on April 29th with a request to let me have all details by May 20th - which is today! So far I have details from only two of the group ready for sending to Hannah Wild at DMBC. The new system operates entirely without printed details which means there is no longer a need to have all copy printed months in advance. However, it is easier for me to submit these walks to Hannah as a block and I would like to have this completed by early June.

I will pursue those who have yet to send me details of the date and details of their walk.

- MW mentioned that he has seen several new brown signs pointing to Wentworth Castle on a recent trip. This is good news but the latest NT magazine suggests it will not reopen until the summer.
